The last twenty years of the Cold War have led to Central America the passage of dictatorial regimes to democratic regimes, till fragile; but for it through a period of revolutions, civil wars and peace. The coincidence of the situation of serious conflict in the region caused the economic crisis was deeper and the later recovery. While Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala have endured over the decades civilians, Honduras and Costa Rica wars have managed to maintain political stability.

Just checking in the 1990s occurred in these Central American countries numerous demonstrations for peace and unity in Central America. All this would lead to the Chapultepec Accords in 1992, where the presidents of Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua agreed to end civil wars in their countries. The presidents of Honduras and Costa Rica agreed with the three other presidents on the proposal for unification of Central America, which was accepted by each and every one of them. In 1993, the five countries mentioned merged kicking off the new republic in Central America.
